This beautiful wine is selling for only R59.95 per bottle at Woolworths Blue Route right now.

Allan Mullins does it again.

Chateau Les Traverses 2006

As a Cape Wine Master and the wine selector for the major South African retailer, Woolworths, he is able to offer a range of wines across all pricing points, from the easy-drinking to the complex and sophisticated special wines. Apart from the local wines available, Allan has procured international wines like Barolo classic Piedmont reds, Lambrusco Rosso Perle Wine, and Vignavecchia Chianti Classico from Tuscany, Cotes Du Rhone Red Wine, several from Bordeaux and wines from Portugal and Spain.

We were thrilled to pick up Chateau Les Traverses 2006 from the Medoc, Bordeaux for the extraordinary price of only R100.00 ($13) Most of the international wines in the range cost less than R100.00.

On the nose this wine did not make me think that it is old world in style at all and reminded me of some of the premium South African wines that we enjoy. Is this an indication of the high standard of Cape Town wines? There are leather and blackberry notes. On the palate the wine is dry to begin with but tastes of ripe plum after a bit. We found it be elegant and smooth.

If you are a lover of French wine but only have a South African budget, bust the bank and stock up while you can.

It takes a special kind of passion for wine, and a determination to keep sourcing, selecting and blending to come up with exceptional ranges of premium wines at the right prices. All the fantastic awards we have won this year show that Woolworths is fortunate to be in partnership with excellent winemakers who are as excited about innovation and quality as we are.

Allan Mullins, Cape Wine Master and wine selector for the major South African retailer Woolworths, presented a tasting of Method Cap Classique wines from the Constantia Valley as well as a French champagne from Alexander Bonet which is sold exclusively at Woolworths under the label, Comtess Alexia. Allan’s extensive knowledge provided many interesting bubbly facts pointing out that champagne sales have fallen as a result of the recession but that demand for cap classique which is made in the traditional French manner is at an all time high. Best to get our festive season stocks in while they are available. Oozing humour and personality, Allan seasoned his talk with a mousse of hilarious anecdotes.

Allan Mullins and his beautiful wife, Therese

It is interesting to note that Archim von Arnim of Cabriere who famously opens bottles with a sabre, was the pioneer of champagne in South Africa in the early eighties.

On tasting champagne Allan mentioned that the best glasses have imperfections which allow the mousse to fizz better. If glasses are not up to scratch simply take a diamond and roughen up the surface.

The venue was the unique and spectacular new cellar door Bistro, 1682, at Steenberg Vineyards which has views across the Constantia valley with False Bay in the distance. This interesting food and wine destination has everything to entice visitors to stay and soak up the beautiful surroundings.

These are the wines that we enjoyed with Allan:

Winston Churchill was an aficionado of Pol Roger champagne and made this well known statement:

In victory, deserve it

In defeat, need it
