The Slow Food Movement was founded in the 1980′s by Carlo Petrini in Italy, to counteract fast food and fast life; the disappearance of local food traditions and peoples’ dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. In support of this philosophy Cape Town has many Slow Food markets, the first to be featured on this blog being The Triangle Square Market.

Dunsterlaan, Fish Hoek Main Road, between Shoprite and the BP garage

WHEN:

Saturdays, 09h00 till 14h00 currently, although plans for an entire weekend market are being developed

WHAT:

Slow Food primarily plus beadwork, fresh flowers, antiques, books and music.

VALUE FOR MONEY:

Excellent!

CHILD FRIENDLY:

Yes

DISABLED ACCESS:

Yes, although rest rooms are inaccessible

Clearly some thought has gone into the developement of this all weather, indoor market. Not only is the entrance impressive and inviting, wooden with steps and a ramp for wheelchairs, black walls garnished with chalky quotes, it is also largely contributing to the re-gentrification of Fish Hoek CBD and the local Community Business Upliftment initiative.

The market is primarily made up of small home based industries with at least two commerically established enterprises being represented. During our first visit, each stall holder without exception, engaged with us on some level to represent their product. Later we discovered that most of the stalls are manned by the creators or small business owners themselves. This cleverly encourages a consistent, fresh product that is not compromised.

Background mood music is discreetely piped throughout, encouraging one to behave as in a chillout lounge. It is in this fashion that one can wander peacefully from one stall to another, enthusiastically delighting in the samples on offer, of which there were plenty!

One section of the market opens up onto a wooden deck with benches and a balcony overlooking Main Road where one can relax and enjoy some of your delicious purchases while the kids entertain themselves in the adjoining childrens’ corner where an entire blackboard wall makes up some of the fun.
